FEMA is running out of money, yet it seems there’s always enough to support illegal immigrants. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas recently admitted that FEMA doesn’t have the funds to make it through the hurricane season. Meanwhile, $640 million has been set aside specifically to deal with illegal immigration.
“We are meeting immediate needs with what we have, but with another hurricane on the way, FEMA is short of funds,” Mayorkas explained. This is concerning since hurricane season lasts until November 30. According to Fox News’s Chad Pergram, “Congress had set aside over $20 billion for FEMA in last week’s emergency spending bill,” but last year, $640 million was given to DHS to help shelter illegal immigrants.
Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody has raised concerns over this financial mismanagement, arguing that taxpayer dollars are being funneled into supporting illegal immigration instead of disaster relief. “This isn’t new,” Moody said, adding that Florida has been warning about this issue since the current administration took office.
Illegal Immigration Over Disaster Relief: A Growing Trend?
Moody didn’t mince words when she criticized the Biden administration. “Mayorkas has come in like a virus and infected crucial programs meant to safeguard Americans during disasters,” she remarked. Moody pointed out that FEMA’s emergency food and shelter program has been drained of hundreds of millions to serve as an immigrant resettlement fund.
This practice, according to Moody, encourages more illegal immigration, with the Biden-Harris administration “funding this on the backs of the American people.” She noted that multiple states, including Florida, North Carolina, and Tennessee, are suffering as a result.
As if the funding crisis weren’t enough, the administration’s response to the recent Helene hurricane has drawn sharp criticism. Vice President Kamala Harris was busy attending celebrity parties in Los Angeles, rather than focusing on disaster relief. Furthermore, the Department of Transportation issued a directive halting drone relief efforts, citing concerns about interference with emergency operations.
A Tale of Two Responses: Trump vs. Biden-Harris
While the Biden-Harris administration scrambles to justify its actions, former President Donald Trump has been proactive in providing assistance. Trump personally delivered truckloads of supplies to Valdosta, Georgia, where the storm hit hardest, and promised more aid for North Carolina victims.
“We brought truckloads of essential items—from oil to water to other equipment,” Trump said during his visit, giving credit to Samaritan’s Purse, an organization known for its disaster relief work. He described the devastation in Valdosta, noting that “thousands are without power, food, and fuel.” Trump assured the crowd that supplies would be distributed across multiple states, including Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and Tennessee.
Trump’s quick response stands in stark contrast to the actions of the current administration, highlighting a difference in leadership style during times of crisis.
Our Take
It’s disturbing to see FEMA underfunded while the DHS gets $640 million to support illegal immigrants. The Biden administration has repeatedly prioritized issues that don’t directly benefit American citizens, even during times of national disaster. The mismanagement of funds meant for FEMA could have deadly consequences, as hurricane victims are left without proper support while resources are diverted elsewhere.
The administration’s inability to respond effectively to natural disasters speaks volumes about its priorities. Meanwhile, states like Florida and Georgia are suffering, and the American people are footing the bill. It’s high time for leadership that puts citizens first.
