Iran is preparing to strike Israel as early as Monday, according to three US and Israeli officials who spoke with Axios reporter Barak Ravid. This anticipated retaliation follows the assassination of Hamas political bureau leader Ismail Haniyeh in Iran last week. In response, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps has vowed a “severe” revenge at an appropriate time and place, blaming the “terrorist Zionist regime” for Haniyeh’s death.
To address these escalating threats, Michael Erik Kurilla, commander of US Central Command, arrived in the Middle East early Sunday morning. His visit aims to prepare a coalition to counter potential Iranian and Hezbollah attacks. Although the visit was planned before the recent events, it underscores the urgency of the current situation.
Israel on High Alert
Israeli officials remain vigilant as several Iranian leaders have promised to avenge Haniyeh’s assassination. In a statement to CBS News, Iran’s mission to the United Nations revealed that Hezbollah might begin targeting Israeli civilians. Previously, Hezbollah had mostly confined its actions to border areas and military targets. However, following Israel’s attack on a residential building in Beirut’s Dahieh district, Hezbollah is expected to expand its targets, potentially including civilian areas.
US Military Response
The US is not taking these threats lightly. The Pentagon announced on Friday that it would deploy additional fighter jets and Navy warships to the Middle East. US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin approved these measures to bolster defenses and ensure readiness for various contingencies. This move includes sending Navy cruisers and destroyers capable of intercepting ballistic missiles and deploying an additional squadron of fighter jets.
The Pentagon is also rotating the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group into the region to replace the USS Theodore Roosevelt. This strategic deployment aims to enhance the US military’s ability to respond to potential threats from Iran and its allies. Despite these preparations, Pentagon spokesperson Sabrina Singh stated that the US hopes to avoid further escalation and believes in a potential ceasefire.
