House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., recently convened with former president Donald Trump at Mar-a-Lago to unveil the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. This critical legislation, originally initiated by Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, mandates proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration. The act delineates specific government-issued IDs acceptable as citizenship evidence, aiming to tighten the electoral process’s security.

The SAVE Act addresses several pivotal issues in the voting system. He highlighted a significant loophole, stating, “If someone claims citizenship, verification isn’t compulsory. This gap has been exploited, blurring our electoral clarity.” Johnson emphasized the critical link between election integrity and the ongoing crisis at the southern U.S. border.

Access to Key Databases

The bill would grant state authorities access to Homeland Security and Social Security databases to aid in regulating federal elections. Johnson expressed urgency in preempting electoral fraud, intensified by illegal immigration. “The threat of fraud escalates with every illegal crossing,” he asserted, indicating the necessity for immediate action given the stakes involved.

Challenges in Congress

Despite the Republican majority in the House, the bill’s passage remains uncertain due to internal divisions and challenges to Johnson’s leadership. Nevertheless, Johnson remains hopeful that the SAVE Act will consolidate Republican support and foster unity.
